The Roma Basket Atelier was formed through a project aimed at supporting local economy, due to the perceived value of the reeds around the Müftü River in Mersin. The atelier supports the education, skills improvement and employment of local citizens by focusing on the hand making abilities of the Roma community women. Reeds are abundant on the northern bank of the river, where they are shaped by these local artisans into several different products. These products enjoy a large popularity and are recognized and sold in national and international markets. In that sense, the atelier is a significant actor in the development of the neighborhoods of Demirtas and Alsancak, associated to the Müftü River and local economic sustainability.
